Out Damned Spot!

I have been suffering with my skin for a few years now so decided to do something about it. Having listened to various therapists talk about the mineral oil and other nasties that can be found in our cosmetics, even the expensive ones, I decided to look for a brand with ingredient integrity that also had the backing of up to date technology and scientific research. Lo and behold, the Sunday Times Style magazine came up trumps with an article about Jane Wurwand. I’d never heard of her either, but it was fascinating reading about a former British salon sweeper upper who went to LA and made a fortune with her own brand of highly researched skincare – Dermalogica. As luck would have it, there are a few salons in Peterborough that stock the brand but only one that has a totally free skin ‘mapping’ system which works out the damage to your skin and what it needs to best repair and fortify it.  The salon is called Nirvana on Oundle Road and I can’t tell you how helpful the staff who work there are. Firstly, I had to put my head in what reminded me of an old time photographer’s ‘box’ with sheeting on all sides. Once inside, I could clearly see, via a mirror, the damage to my skin that years of constant sunbathing had done.  Once diagnosed, the therapist taught me how to use all the various products I would need, one by one, and then gave them all to me as handy trial sizes so I could test them at home and see for myself. All this for FREE!! Did I go back and buy? You bet I did. My skin breakouts got worse (I was warned this might happen) but is now clearer and firmer than it’s been for many years. You might not have a salon near you that carries out this technique but you can have a go yourself on the official website

I would also add that their fake tan is the best I’ve ever come across!

Pure Wisdom – when you really need it

Inspiration, Life No Comments »
Sometimes a book comes along that ‘speaks’ to you in a language you can readily understand, making everything so clear you wondered how you could have managed without it. That’s what Pure Wisdom does for you. The subtitle states’ The simple things that transform everyday life’ and, like the well known TV advert, this book really does do what it says on the tin!

The book is split into 3 separate sections with very short chapters, each containing a vital lesson on wisdom. I read it in one sitting but I would urge any reader to go back and practice the lessons in each chapter one by one. As the author opines it’s the small steps we take, not the huge leaps, that carry us to a more fulfilled, balanced and fortifying life.

The book’s philosophy is based on the principles the author learned from the martial art, karate – he was a former British champion. Many of us believe that in order to have, we need to do. Essentially, this is not true. First and foremost we need to just be. Perhaps that is why we are called human ‘beings’?

I loved the fact that the book assures us that it is normal to make errors and never be perfect. It illustrates that balance can be difficult to achieve when the ground is always shifting and how we need to go with the flow (and sometimes take a risk) if we are to develop and grow. Wisdom is about contradictions but actual wisdom lies in how to reconcile them.  Pure Wisdom is full of insights on how to do just that.

Read this book if you want to live the best life you can, in the most authentic way you can. In our modern and, at times, very unpredictable lives it pays to have something to rely upon that helps us find clarity, calmness and simplicity when our mind is in chaos. At these times, this book will become your very best friend – full of fabulous advice, no negative judgements and 1000 year principles that will serve you for many years to come.

Who Ate The Pies?

Had to laugh yesterday when I read Michael Deacon’s column in the Telegraph. He was moaning about how the sunshine brings out the worst in male dressing – football shirts to be specific. He is quite right. I wrote a whole piece on this very topic in my book ’Does My Belly Look Big in This?’ which is targeted at the (slightly) overweight man i.e. my husband. The basic fact is that all men love to belong. It’s a tribal thing. That’s why they wear the bright, form fitting, shiny football shirts so they send a message to all the other men about which family they are a part of and who is their ‘enemy’. The fact their stomachs and red faces might clash is of no consequence. Tribe is everything. Sartorial disaster, though it might be, is a non priority.

Was really thrilled to find out that My Weekly had published one of my articles – originally written for The Menopause Exchange last year – and added photographs of the resulting makeover.  Good to know that anyone can easily use my tips and, more importantly, that they work!!
