Campaign For Body Confidence

Beauty, Image, Inspiration, Life No Comments »

As you know I had a meeting with Jo Swinson and her team at The House of Parliament on Monday. She is committed to trying to eradicate the false images of perfection that our young people are striving towards by bringing in relevant education.

If you are interested in joining a campaign to represent women as they actually are and stop advertisers and magazines airbrushing or using only skinny models, then sign up for The Campaign For Body Confidence NOW.  This is an initiative from an across the board political party action group, which is great news for all of us, whatever our age or circumstances.  Let’s face it, there is as much pressure on new mums and menopausal women to look as good as our counterpart celeb’s too.

You’ll be in good company: Caryn Franklin, Susie Orbach & Gok Wan are putting their all behind this  – to name just a few.

Beautiful magazine – challenging the face of women’s glossies

Beauty, Fashion, Image, Inspiration, Shopping, Style No Comments »

The only glossy lifestyle magazine dedicated to building self-esteem, Beautiful magazine, has just launched its summer 2011 issue. Published independently by Sue Thomason and Sarah Kenny, the women’s title hopes to reverse the damaging trends set by current women’s mainstream magazines by only publishing images of models size 12 and over; banning ads that are harmful to self esteem and not using retouching or image manipulation. This fills a giant gap in the print magazine market. You can purchase this summer’s issue from Evans stores, or online: www.beautifulmagazine.co.uk

The Finishing Touch

I was thrilled to receive the new e-book from Imogen Lamport, a colleague from Melbourne who is a total inspiration. Entitled The Finishing Touch, it’s the book I wish I’d written – and I can’t say more than that. Focussing on accessories, Imogen demonstrates how we can use them to give any outfit ( from the truly casual to the extremely elegant) that ‘je ne sais quoi’.  As it’s chock full of explanatory photo’s it’s really easy to follow and so well explained that I might just be out of a job!!  It’s very comprehensive, covering everything you’re ever likely to need and other things you never even thought about. Combining traditional expertise with up to date clothing and text with graphics means that every learning style is covered and every style personality too. A ‘must-have’ e-book that you’ll use time and time again and I’ll bet it will never let you down. It’s a style guide that no-one should be without.

Finding Paradise

I was thrilled and excited to see that one of my very favourite authors had included a chapter on one of my favourite subjects with one of my favourite consultants. Isabel Losada tries everything I’ve ever wanted to try to find enlightenment and happiness. I am a massive fan of  ‘The Battersea Park Park to Enlightenment’ so couldn’t wait to get my hands on her latest book ‘The Battersea Park Road to Paradise’.

One of the ‘highlights’ of the book is a ‘feng shui’ of her home. It’s interesting how she has a consultation which doesn’t go well and another, with the lovely Sylvia Bennett, that shows how it should be done. I met Sylvia last year at a Fashion Feng Shui workshop in London which I was co-running. As a member of the Feng Shui Society she was so inspired by what she learned that she kindly invited me to speak at their annual conference last September – great fun. Check out the article page on her website, where there’s a review of the book  and a link to Isabel’s  site.

To Die For?

An impassioned study  exposing the dirty secrets behind our habit to furiously turn over the fashion in our wardrobes is now available as a book. ‘Fashion Wearing Out The World’ by Lucy Siegle is quite a worrying read – to say the least. Did you know that we have 4 times as many clothes as we did in 1980 and as prices have dropped it’s led to a throwaway culture, clogging up the planet, polluting many rivers and causing health risks to many people overseas.

While I can’t do much about this on a global level, I am attempting to do my bit by hosting the PECT (Peterborough Environment City Trust) Swish party tomorrow night at Westgate House. I’m also doing 3 makeovers at the Trashion Show next Thursday in Queensgate using clothes from Sue Ryder charity shop. There are still tickets available. So if you want to swap some unwanted, but good quality, clothing for something new and exciting contact Penny on  penny.fletcher@pect.org.uk

Oh and by the way, I’m on the radio tomorrow morning at 08.30 telling you all about it. So listen in if you can.
