The good news is that anything goes for Autumn. Choose any hem length and you’ll be on trend, which is great news for those of us that don’t like showing our legs. The 4 main styles are: micro mini ( possibly not!), pencil, midi and maxi, so something for everyone. Just be careful of the midi as it can cut across the largest part of your calf, which isn’t flattering so look for hemlines that flatter the ankle. Pencil skirts look great on those of you with an hourglass and a high hip, so flaunt it! The 40′s look is back in vogue as is the 60′s, so you’ll find curves and boxiness in designs. The maxi is arguably the skirt that, for me anyway, is the hardest to wear, even if it doesn’t appear so at first glance. I find I get all tangled up in it and can’t walk fast enough but if you love them, keep out your summer maxi dress and sling a sweater over the top, add a pair of boots and you’re ready to go.
I blogged about this about 1 year ago but the subject has now been published in a new book ‘Honey, Money: The Power of Erotic Capital’ by female academic Catherine Hakim. Her theory is based on the premise that there have thus far been 3 types of capital ( apart from the capital city) economic, social and human on which we base our judgments of others. However, Hakim believes in a 4th – erotic capital. What is it? A mixture of beauty, intelligence, sex appeal and social skills. Who has it? Some of the best known and most successful business women in the world – Sam Cameron, Tamara Mellon, Nigella Lawson. I know many women believe that getting a job or a promotion should be about ability alone but we know that is never going to happen. Research by Robert Half indicates that only 10% of your promotional prospects are based on your ability to do your job well – in actual fact, that should be a given. Good looking people have always been more successful but this book goes further than that. This is about the ability of all of us to make the best of what we have – dressing well, stylish and well kept hair and looking groomed. If we can’t be bothered to do that for ourselves, why should anyone else bother about us?

…. carrying on the theme of amazing older women, I’ve just booked to see Sharon Glass starring in A Round Heeled Woman at Riverside Studios http://www.aroundheeledwoman.com/?gclid=CJ_TivrR4qoCFUkf4QodqlPv7Q The play is based on the true life story of Jane Jusqa, who placed an ad in The New York Review of Books which said “Before I turn 67 – next March – I would like to have a lot of sex with a man I like. If you want to talk first, Trollope works for me”. She received 63 replies, from men aged between 32 and 84. A Round-Heeled Woman tells the real-life adventures of some of the encounters which resulted. Jane’s courageous journey takes her through falling in love, some heartbreak, rejection and humiliation, a lot of laughs, and her first orgasm with a man after 30 years. The play deals with the universally engaging themes of love, loss, personal empowerment, and the wisdom which comes with the passing years. And yes… sex. If you prefer to read about it, the book is also available on Amazon.
I see Dallas is making a comeback, starring some of the original actors. Expecting grey haired senior citizens, I was completely taken aback when I saw photo’s of Linda Gray. The actress, who plays Sue Ellen, looks even more amazing and gorgeous than she did in the original series, yet she is now 70 years old. Wow! Whatever she’s doing, I want some. Reportage says she works out 6 times a week so she can keep up basketball practice with her grandsons. With that in mind, perhaps I need to get my trainers out!

The Danish score again with the introduction of a new brand into the Uk. Nu Woman offers the kind of clothes I love – funky, easy to wear, versatile, well priced and just yummy. They even have a capsule of 7 garments that will take you throughout the A/W season. Just accessorise to mix and match and ring the changes – and no, this is not Weekenders! Look at page 38 on the catalogue – link below

Mary Portas has come up with a genius idea to banish the flabby arms we all seem to acquire as we get older, however much exercise we do. ‘Armery’ is like having tights on your arms and from £18, not a bad price to pay. Look out for her new shop in House of Fraser, Oxford Street. It’s going to be spectacular.
I am SUCH a huge fan of hers so I hope the concept catches on in the provinces.
Not pleasant, I know, but if you are finding holes in your clothes or have suffered from moth infestations before and want to take preventative measures, the moth box is a simple yet effective method. The moth box targets the male moths, luring them in with female pheromones. Inside the moth box is a sticky adhesive strip that the moths get stuck to, this therefore breaks the breeding cycle and frees your wardrobe from these unwelcome visitors. A female moth can lay up to 300 eggs during her 3 month lifetime! Moths basically want to eat, mate and lay eggs, hence the reason moth problems can get out of control if they are not dealt with.

What to look out for:
- Holes in your clothes
- Moths with white heads and wings about 2 cm wide with a black and cream front and pale grey on the hind
- Cream caterpillars with black heads about the size of a grain of rice – these do the eating!
Moth boxes and other anti moth products are available online at www.totalwardrobecare.co.uk.
